In the spirit of the Sustainable Development Objectives Charter adopted by the EPA, the operation’s website aims to meet web accessibility criteria as defined by W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).

The application of these recommendations guarantees access to information, education and culture to disabled persons. The latter may include blind persons, who need to use specific technical aids (a Braille keyboard) or software (e.g. a speech synthesizer) in order to access the information contained on a client screen, or temporarily disabled persons. In addition, the recommendations also aim to make reading easier for all.

What makes a site accessible?

The definition of accessibility according to W3C is the following:

“One of W3C's primary goals is to make these benefits available to all people, whatever their hardware, software, network infrastructure, native language, culture, geographical location, or physical or mental ability”.

Here are a few important points facilitating access to information.

Using CSS2 Style Sheets in order to separate presentation style from content: you can deactivate the styles in your browser and keep only the text and images of the content;

  • Aided navigation: easy access to the research engine and site map
  • Commented images and links
  • Alternative contents available for flash animations;
  • Increasing size of text through browser
  • Keyboard access to key functions, etc.

In order to use the keyboard shortcuts with your browser:

  • Internet Explorer Windows: Alt+Shift+ accesskey (not on the numeric keypad), then Enter
  • Firefox 2: Alt + Shift + accesskey
  • Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox (1.5 or under): Alt and (accesskey:
  • Opera: Esc + Shift and accesskey
  • IE on Macintosh: Ctrl and accesskey, then Enter;
  • Safari, Mozilla, Netscape, FireFox on Macintosh: Ctrl and accesskey;

Text size

You can adjust the size of the characters according to need thanks to a specific function of your browser.

To increase/reduce the size of the text:

With various browsers: Ctrl and mouse button

Internet Explorer: go to View then Text Size and choose
Firefox, Mozilla or Netscape: press Ctrl and “+” key of the numeric keypad to increase size and Ctrl and “-“ to reduce.
Opera: press keys “+” or “-“ on the numeric keypad, or go to View, then Zoom and choose.
